Norfolk church merges with another after 100 years in Ghent

Posted to: Community News Norfolk Norfolk News Spotlight

It was a Ghent presence for nearly 100 years, but First Christian Church flickered out as a congregation this month after decades of declining membership.

The church sold its building at 1600 Colonial Ave. in Norfolk to Trinity Presbyterian Church two years ago but continued Sunday services on the site. Its membership kept declining, with just five baptisms in the last eight years.

Last Sunday, First Church formally merged with Diamond Springs Christian Church in Virginia Beach to form a new congregation, Chalice Christian Church. Chalice is based in the former Diamond Springs church building at 5612 Haden Road.
