NSU to hold 9/11 observance before football game

NORFOLK
Norfolk State University will have a 9/11 observance Saturday before the start of the annual Fish Bowl Classic football game at 4 p.m.

Skydivers will deliver the game ball to members of Virginia Task Force 2, an elite urban search-and-rescue team, which was dispatched to the Pentagon after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

NORFOLK Norfolk Southern is getting ready to celebrate the completion of a rail corridor that's expected to increase freight traffic and reduce travel times.

After sunset today, Norfolk Southern Train 233 will leave Hampton Roads pulling double-stacked cargo containers headed to Chicago and Ohio.

NORFOLK The red zone, known in football circles as the area inside the opponents' 20-yard line, was an area where Old Dominion flourished a year ago. En route to a 9-2 record, ODU scored 82 percent of the time in the red zone - 72 percent of the time a touchdown. In six trips into the red zone on Saturday, in a 35-25 loss to visiting Jacksonville, ODU was a 50-50 team.

NORFOLK The Salvation Army Tidewater Area Command will offer Emergency Disaster Service training at 10 a.m. Thursday at 5525 Raby Road. Participants will learn about food and hydration services, emergency shelter, cleanup, restoration and rebuilding in the aftermath of a natural or man-made disaster.

Beach man gets 35 years for attempted kidnapping

When undercover federal agents arrested Alan Paul Strieper at the Norfolk airport in February, they found in his car all the supplies needed for kidnapping, and maybe even killing, a young child: rope, tape, rubber gloves, bleach, sponges and a stuffed Elmo doll. Authorities said the agents probably saved a little boy's life that day.

A grand jury indicted a drunken-driving suspect of aggravated involuntary manslaughter for a crash last month that killed three passengers.
Prosecutors are seeking three felony charges against Craig A. Watson, 30, in the Aug. 11 wreck that also left two other passengers injured. The grand jury issued sealed indictments against Watson last week.

Norfolk police identify man who drowned in Elizabeth River

NORFOLK Police identified a man who drowned in the Elizabeth River early Friday as Warren Glen Howard Jr., 25, of the 2800 block of Kimball Terrace. Howard had gone for a dip in the river's Eastern Branch about 1 a.m. with a friend, Timeka Rawls, and her 10-year-old son. They went into the water off a path to the river at the Grandy Village public housing complex, where both lived.

Lane closures beginning on Norfolk's Brambleton Ave.

NORFOLK

A street improvement project will cause lane closures this week on Brambleton Avenue between Boush and Yarmouth streets.

The work will be done daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and calls for one lane to be closed in each direction between Botetourt and Boush streets, a city news release says. Closures also will happen on Boush Street between Bute and Grace streets.
